AVC, also called H.264 or x264, is one of the most compatible video codecs. Older TVs, computers, phones and players can usually play it reliably. The tradeoff is efficiency: for 4K, high bitrate and HDR, it often needs larger files than HEVC or AV1 for similar quality. It is best when compatibility matters more than peak efficiency.
